  • Sep 29, 2008 · 390's are enjoying a bit of a resurgence thanks to stroker kits and aluminum heads now available from Edelbrock and others. They are well worth building and can make some great power and torque.
  • When I do another FE, I'll use a 390 +.030 and a 4.25 stroker kit = 445. So, yes, you can take a 390 to 427 (and beyond). The cubic inches will be there, just not the same bore and stroke configuration as the original 427, which was really a 425. 427 was big bore/shorter stroke. 390/445 will be smaller bore (than 427) but longer stroke.
  • FE Intake Adapters are designed to allow the use of a 351C intake manifold on the FE engine, or the construction of a simple sheet metal intake. Using the adapters, certain intake manifolds such as tunnel rams can be used on the FE, plus the intake adapters offer a removable center plate to access the lifter valley, and the ability to change intakes or easily build a custom intake.

Examples race camshaft and torque intake, or stock heads with a tall single plane intake manifold.
  • The days of using an out of the catalog cam are long gone. There are too many options, such as cylinder heads and stroker kits, to cover with off the shelf cams. Although you could physically install the same cam in anything from a 221ci small block to a 427ci + stroker, the performance outcome would be a shot in the dark!

This was now one serious truck engine, but we weren't quite finished.
I sell more FE stroker kits than anybody in the country, and 4.250 kits sell 10:1 over the 4.125. Simply no reason to use the shorter stroke on a street application - especially in a heavier car or truck.
