• Feb 03, 2015 · For the waterfowl hunting (what little I do), I use the bismuth shot. Expensive, but for how little of it I shoot, it's not too awful wallet-killing. The guys that shoot shot through muskets like to use a heavier shot charge than normal (and a bit larger shot) to get better groups from their unchoked smoothbore musket barrels.
  • Aug 27, 2018 · I us 2 3/4" 12ga. reloads or Kent factory bismuth 4 on ducks and it will take geese to 40 yds. In the 16ga I shoot 4 or 5 bismuth and in 20ga. 5's . I'm in the process of changing my Gold 10 light over from BBB steel shot to bismuth , I have B and O size bismuth to pattern with.

  • Smaller Ducks (teal, widgeon, etc.): I probably would not use a shot size larger than #5 or #6 ... but since I'll be shooting almost entirely Mallards - I may go to #4. Geese: BB or BBB. Yum. Bismuth. In my left vest pocket I carry BB or BBB, and in my right I carry the duck loads. Never know when you might have to switch on short order .

Brown Assuming you're shooting steel shot, I really wouldn't recommend anything less than BB for geese, for the kind of shooting you're describing. If you want to pay for the tungsten or bismuth rounds, the 2-shot might be acceptable but I'd still prefer the BBs. For ducks, I'll use 2- or 4- shot, even with steel.
Lead has been illeagal for waterfowl nationally in the USA since 1991, and some states and areas are considering only steel shot for upland birds too. No way man, go with a smaller steel shot size for geese. For geese in steelshot I stick with BB in modified choke, but have use T shot too before, but have never gone any larger than T shot though.
