Bernoulli random variables can be most easily generated with just a comparison against a constant. I tested this and checked that the mean matched the expected value. The way I think of circuits/combinators/etc. is breaking down what I want to happen into small steps. In your example, those steps are "I want the inserter to work if the chest has 9 or fewer items, and I want the inserter to stop if the chest has 10 or more items".
Combinator logic works because Factorio only updates at 60 times per second, such that combinators analyze their logic in a step, and then sum and/or decide the resulting output values on the next step. When logic values are computed by combinators, the outputs are not recognized by the circuit network until the following step.DO NOT have LTN Combinator installed. Fixed for Factorio version 0.18.27 and above. Adds a new type of Constant Combinators to the game. They come with a custom GUI to ease the control of LTN signals.
Factorio is the only game I can think of that could be used for education while not feeling like an "education" game. Most educative games (from my experience) are not fun. But Factorio is a metaphor for real world software engineering and it is done without the player needing to be aware of it.
