Thks happened multiple times during the French revolution. The American revolution faired much better because they kept most of their power structure in place afterwards. The Franco American relationship hadn't got off to a good start, the Americans thinking the French were worse than useless and French thinking the American's shambolic army was a laughable spectacle, consequently were not welcomed in Boston, (but there again, from my experience that wouldn't be anything unusual).
